A hardy plant, the gardenia jasminoides is popular with many home gardeners. In order to grow a this gardenia plant, you should make sure the plant has plenty of sunshine, as with any other plant. However, the gardenia also grows best with some degree of shade. Trying to grow the plant in bright sunlight will cause problems in blooming, and leaf growth.

Another aspect of growing this gardenia plant is that it must have very specific soil. To grow their best, it must grow in a very acidic soil. The soil must be very wet, but the moisture also has to have an ability to drain well, lest the plant develop root rot. The final ingredient to the soil is that it must have high amounts of organic matter. Gardenia Augusta should be exposed to mulch and the flowers fed a meal of fish emulsion, acid plant fertilizer, or even a simple blood meal. They should be fed this meal in mid-March and again in late June. This is to encourage extra flowers and growth of younger shrubs.

Unlike other flowers, the gardenia jasminoides plant should not be fertilized in the autumn. Fertilizing in the fall will cause the growth to be stimulated, which can cause the plant to die in the colder weather (once temperatures drop below fifteen degrees Fahrenheit. In states that have cold weather, you will need to either bring your gardenia jasminoides inside, or simply know that it will die off in the winter. Many times, the plant will come back in the springtime.

Another maintenance tool is that the gardenia plant must be well-pruned after the flowers appear. Removing the branches and faded petals is a high priority for this type of plant. The looks of the gardenia Augusta vary, depending on which specific gardenia you comes across. Generally, however, they are moderately large evergreen plants, and can reach heights of four to six feet, and widths that stretch between four to five feet.

The flowers of the plant vary between white to yellow. They are also two to three inches in width. As for leaves, the gardenia is known for having dark green leaves, that reach two to four inches long. The gardenia plant is known for its great fragrance. It is one of the most fragrant, sweet smelling flowers, which is why so many choose to grow the plant in their gardens.

Gardenia jasminoides is a popular plant, and like any plant, in order to reach its full potential, must be looked after properly.
