If you would like to be successful with vegetable gardening the first step is to plan properly. By thinking ahead you can prevent many problems that otherwise would come up and damage or destroy your vegetable garden

Here are four important considerations you need to keep in mind as you plan the garden. The garden location, which plants you are considering, how many you want to plant, and what, if any structures you will need to build or buy.

The location of your garden is the first consideration to take into account. Some gardening experts suggest vegetable gardens that are planted close to the home have less issues with pests and are more successful.

This may not be best for certain types of plants. Because if you are putting your garden in a place where there is plenty of shade, and the plants you place at that location need plenty of sunlight, the plants may suffer significantly.

A key point to remember is that less than ideal levels of sun, water and soil nutrients will affect a plants health and growth.

Once you have decided where you want your garden, test the quality of soil in the area. Make sure it has the right amounts of key nutrients, salinity, and acidity to make your plants grow at optimal levels. If you are lacking in these soil qualities, adding fresh topsoil and compost can compensate, but it is important to know this ahead of time.

The second point to keep in mind when planning your garden is the types of plants you would like to grow. If this is your first attempt planting a garden, simpler plants that are hardy and easy to grow will be the best choice. Peppers, onions, squash and lettuce are good vegetables a novice gardener can begin growing.

A third point to keep in mind is how many plants do you want to grow? It is better to plant fewer vegetables and be successful than it is to plant many and have them die off one by one. The more plants you have the more time and money will have to spend on weeding, fertilizing and pest control.

Finally, decide what structures are needed for the plant you are going to grow. For example, if growing a vine plant like beans, you will need a trellis, fence or wooden stake for it to grow on.

If you are new to vegetable gardening, it can be difficult getting started. However, with preparation and planning, even a clueless gardener can successfully grow a tasty crop of healthy veggies
