Houseplants can do more than just add color to a room. They release a fair amount of fresh oxygen and keep it circulating within your home. They also can lift your spirits and are a beautiful addition to any room in your home. To have these welcomed benefits, properly caring for the plants is a necessity.

Each plant species has its own unique qualities. That being said, it essential you understand as much as you can about the plants you have inside your home, and how best to care for them.

What kind of plant do you own?

Step one in caring for any houseplant is being clear on the type of plant you have. This can be done by taking the plant with you to a local nursery shop or searching online for the species. Many plants need significant watering and humidity while other species need dry soil and small light needs. The closely you can get to their ideal growing environment, the better success you will have. Follow these tips to help you along.

First: What is its sunlight need?

Sunlight is food for plants, so it is important to understand how much is needed for he plant to stay healthy and disease free.. It is safe to say most plants need at least some sunlight throughout the day. Other kinds of plants will do fine with tiny amounts of sunlight.

Second: Get the soil right:

Nutrients are delivered to plants through its soil. Therefore, good soil should be nutrient rich, so the plant can maintain its beautiful colors and general health. Your local gardening shop can figure out the kind of soil to use.

Third: Correct watering levels.

Getting the watering right for houseplant may be one of your biggest challenges. Again, you need to know the plant species and it is specific watering needs. If you unsure of the plant you have, it is best to keep the soil moist, but never waterlogged. If you see that some leaves are beginning to fall off, it may be receiving too much water.

If you see any diseased leaves or stems, you may remove that part of the plant (if it is possible do so without harming the entire plant). The pot the plant is kept in should be at least as wide as the leaf span. It should also allow the roots room to grow. Change pots to fit the growth of your houseplant accordingly.

With these three steps you will be known as the one with the green thumb. Now get out there and grow some houseplants.
