Creating a garden that can supply summer salads and winter vegetables can be difficult when under the thumb of water companies and hose pipe bans. Luckily, there is a garden watering method that has been tried and tested in the most arid regions of the planet, capable of keeping gardens green and vegetable patches productive. By using a combination of collected water and irrigation supplies, you can turn any garden or allotment into a horticultural paradise that will have your neighbours green with envy.

They say that the grass is always greener on the other side, well it can be lush and emerald on your side too with a little bit of know how. Water conservation is becoming a popular topic of discussion amongst gardeners in an effort to grow succulent plants in the drier weather. Collecting what is called grey water and rain water for watering purposes is easy with the simple installation of a water butt in the garden. This collects water from guttering and can also be rigged up to collect dirty water from washing up, showers and baths.

Using grey water means that it is possible to use irrigation systems for all your watering needs. Simply run your feeder tubes from the water butt via a control panel that can be programmed to deliver the right amount of water to specific areas of the garden. Individual drippers can be added to feeder tubes and hoses to direct water at the plant, with minimum wastage.

Not only is this an efficient way to use water, it is a more effective way to produce healthy plants. Drip feeding ensures that plants are not over watered, under watered or subject to scorching from being watered in the sun. It also allows the keen gardener to have a holiday without fear of losing a crop, harvest, or precious flower borders.

Irrigation is such an efficient watering method that it is used in arid regions such as Africa to produce crops with as little water wastage as possible. Although the African community rely on tapping into underwater reservoirs for their supply, they understand more than most how precious a commodity such as water is.

Gardeners in the west do not rely on water management for survival, but by simply taking inspiration from farmers in dry areas, it is possible to appreciate the fine balance of nature. Responsible use of the world's resources is becoming a more prominent topic of conversation, and watering the garden efficiently will become just as important as household recycling.
