A wide variety of outdoor power equipment is available to make yard work easier. Lawnmowers, snow blowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, rototillers and pressure washers are just a few examples of machines that can be found in many garages. As with all machines, outdoor power equipment will eventually require maintenance or repair. Finding the correct parts for your specific make and model of machine can be frustrating unless you're prepared.
Each part of your machine is identified by a unique part number. Knowing the part number will make finding the parts you need much easier. The owner's manual that came with your equipment may have a listing of the part numbers and may also contain a list of local or online dealers where parts may be purchased.
If the owner's manual is not available or does not list part numbers, the equipment manufacturer's website will likely be helpful. Parts listings are often indexed by the machine's model number. The model number is almost always found on the machine itself - usually printed onto a sticker or a tag that's attached to the machine. It may also be stamped or cast directly into part of the machine. Once you have your machine's model number you can provide it to a dealer and describe the part you need. Or you can look up part numbers yourself from your model's parts listing.
Often the manufacturers of larger (non-handheld) equipment such as lawnmowers, snow blowers and tractors do not make the engines used on these machines. In such cases the engine's make and model number are used to locate engine parts. On a lawnmower for example, blades or wheels are considered parts of the lawnmower while a spark plug or air filter is considered part of the engine. There are exceptions to this arrangement, so if you're uncertain which model number is needed then write down both.
Many manufacturers publish illustrated parts lists directly on their websites, or at least have contact information for their dealers. Dealer websites may also contain parts lists for the brands of equipment that they support, and many offer parts for sale right online. A local dealer that supports your brand of machine is your best resource for parts, service and advice.
Always consult the instructions that came with your machine. Not all parts of a machine are intended to be replaced by the end user, but many common parts such as blades and filters are easy to replace yourself. Keeping your equipment properly maintained will improve its performance and extend its life.
